Job Summary Oversee the daily operations for all disciplines within Science and Engineering division at assigned campus. Coordinate and initiate the lab procedures, procedures and activities, as well as maintain the general functionality for Science & Engineering laboratories. Responsibilities Oversee the daily laboratory operations for all disciplines within Science & Engineering at assigned campus. Coordinate and communicate with instructors, lab staff, supervisor and the Division Chair in planning and organizing the development, preparations and setup of laboratory experiments that support all classes. Develop and maintain laboratory protocols and instructor's guides for laboratory exercises. Oversee part time laboratory staff as assigned by supervisor. Organize and communicate part time lab staff assignment schedules. Conduct orientation and training in standard lab protocols, material, equipment, and waste management. Establish and enforce a safe work and learning environment as it applies to handling, storage, documentation, and disposal of chemicals and biohazards used in the lab in order to comply with applicable college policies and procedures, state and federal laws, rules and regulations. Ensure proper handling of lab equipment and chemicals, including disposal of hazardous waste. Prepare chemical solutions and growth media, culture microbes (BSL-1 & BSL-2), and assemble all lab supplies, including preserved dissectible specimens. Participate in the development of new labs. Properly analyze lab results and interpret issues to fix classroom experiments when problems arise. Test student lab procedures & protocols to ensure learner success in labs. Be proficient in the operation and use of scientific instrumentation, to include maintenance and repair, as necessary. Ensure laboratory equipment is maintained. Perform routine repair and maintenance and arrange for outside service as needed. Develop, maintain, and communicate information on purchasing, inventories, and waste handling. Successfully learn financial requirements and obligations relating to procurement and maintain vendor relationships necessary for the benefit of the college. Acquire quotations and complete purchases successfully and communicate the status of orders to all involved. Manage an inventory system for chemicals/reagents, instructional materials, and equipment. Assess and maintain appropriate levels of office and laboratory supplies and reagents. M ARGINAL FUNCTIONS: The position may perform other duties commensurate with the functions and level of the position to include participating in committee and subcommittee assignments, outreach/community events, and the recruitment and retention of students. Qualifications E DUCATION: Bachelor's Degree in Physical or Biological Sciences E X P E RIENCE: Two (2) years related experience Background Verification : As a condition of employment, all candidates accepting an offer of employment for a full-time, part- time, temporary, student worker, or volunteer position, will be required to undergo a Background Verification. Employment with Central Arizona College is contingent upon the successful completion of the background verification. The level the background verification for this position is: Standard level. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge, skill, and ability in supervision, leadership, and motivation Strong interpersonal skills, written and verbal. Knowledge and ability to operate, maintain, and/or repair relevant laboratory equipment Ability to work independently and as a member of a team in accomplishing tasks Knowledge of a variety of word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail and Internet software Knowledge, skill, and ability to follow College safety plans and standards. Knowledge of laboratory techniques. Critical thinking skills to properly analyze lab success and interpret issues in classroom experiments when problems arise. Knowledge and skill to assist in budget planning and management. Ability to understand and follow financial requirements and obligations relating to procurement and maintain vendor relationships necessary for the benefit of the College. P HYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Duties require occasional physical exertion, work with moderate (up to 25 lbs.) materials unassisted. Duties performed causes light fatigue of eyes, fingers, or other faculties due to long periods of standing, sitting, and/or repetitive motion. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Demonstrates the willingness as well as the capacity to cooperate in a professional and courteous manner with other College employees and students. Shares knowledge and contributes to helping others collegially while supporting the mission of the College. W ORKING CONDITIONS:Job is performed in laboratory setting area with many and frequent distractions such as noise, interruptions, or congested work areas with exposure to some disagreeable elements. Occasionally may be exposed to chemical fumes and particulate matter. Occasionally may be exposed to hazardous chemicals and materials. Travel may be required to attend meetings, procure supplies, attend outreach events, or work at another campus. May be asked on occasion to work hours outside of the normal work schedule.
