Northwest Youth Corps OR - AmeriCorps 480 Hour Individual Placement National Park Service Lewis and Clark National Historical Park Astoria, Oregon Position Title: Interpretation and Education AmeriCorps Member - 480 HR Grant Program: OYSI 22EDBDC0020010 / EAP 21EDBDC0010041 Position Summary: Lewis and Clark National Historical Park is recruiting for two to three 480 HR Interpretation and Education AmeriCorps Members beginning in early June and serving through August 2024 (480 hours, 12 weeks). Starting date is negotiable to accommodate student schedules. The focus is on the months of June, July, and August due to recreating public. The interns will learn interpretive methods and offer costumed programs at Fort Clatsop, act as instructors for summer youth enrichment programs, and lead hikes and kayak trips for the public. With seven sites on both sides of the Columbia River in Washington and Oregon, the park includes wetlands, upland forests, coastal dunes, and prairies. Annual visitation is more than 250,000 visitors. Duties and Responsibilities: The members will work for Environmental Education (35%) Duties will include instructing enrichment activities for students on general ecology, edible plants, and animal behaviors. Some formal training will be provided on this topic. Kayak Programs (20%) Duties will include kayaking while presenting informational talks, ensuring safety of visitors, and surveying for new invasive species infestations along 2.0 miles of the Lewis and Clark River. Visitor Engagement (45%) Duties will include general orientation for visitors at the visitors center, fort, and trail, along with assisting with the Junior Ranger program as well as providing costumed fort programs and uniform nature walks. Required Qualifications: Ability to work outdoors, hike, and assist the public in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground. Willingness to work as part of a team in an outdoor setting Ability to give direction and talk to the public Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to paddle and self-rescue out of a kayak or canoe (training will be provided). Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. Willingness to submit to a government background check Current driver's license and clean driving record A positive attitude Desired Qualifications: Experience in presenting informational or educational talks to the general public. Experience teaching and/or leading youth, conservation, reforestation and/or outdoor rec skills. Bilingual, Spanish speaking, reading and writing skills Duty Location: The interns will report to the Visitor Services Division, Fort Clatsop Unit of Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, 92343 Fort Clatsop Road in Astoria, Oregon. Terms of Employment : Each AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting in early June and going through August 2024. The member must complete a minimum of 480 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours. Program Benefits : $7,200 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis and upon successful completion of program requirements, education award amount of $1824.07 . The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
