Position Overview A Machine Builder position in the manufacturing industry will design, build and modify industrial machinery. The position is expected to assemble, fit, inspect, modify components in a machine build or modification. Some simple machining capabilities are needed to modify assembly parts ensuring a proper fit and functionality. Duties and Responsibilities Fabricate and modify parts to repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying the knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout and machining procedures Develop, assemble and modify custom machinery Operate a variety of machine tools to modify or repair custom machinery Detect and report defective materials Modify existing tooling for new or old job prints Repair jigs, fixtures, dies, molds, machine tools, cutting tools, gauges, and other tools used in manufacturing processes Set up machinery (mill, lathe, surface grinder, etc.) Complete and maintain paperwork for parts Reconstruct existing tooling in the instance of a failure Perform inspections of machinery and document results Maintain proper housekeeping and safety standards Carefully route cables and air lines Participate in department/shift/team meetings Be open to suggestions or ideas to learn new processes and accommodate simplicity and efficiency in custom fabrication tooling Prompt and regular attendance at an assigned work location. Interact and communicate with employees and customers in an appropriate manner. Availability on site to confer with staff members with whom the employee must interact on a regular basis. Communicate via email, prepare reports and work schedules. Review and analyze data and information concerning upcoming projects. Ensure all components needed are fabricated and purchased parts are in-house before build is attempted. Plan, prioritize and monitor machining activities. Complete assigned tasks/projects in a timely manner. Supervisory Responsibility No direct management or supervisory responsibilities. Safety Observe safety and security policies and procedures, including proper use of PPE (personal protective equipment); report potentially unsafe conditions; and use equipment and materials properly. The individual will also follow job-specific safety requirements such as Housekeeping, Ladder Safety, Power and Manual Tool Safety, Safe Lift and Scaffold Safety. Travel Minimal travel is required for work between the Quaker campuses. Qualifications An individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Knowledge of mechanical skills including, but not limited to mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, troubleshooting, and repair of production and facility equipment. Mechanical capacity to read blueprints and use necessary measuring devices to make, or modify tools for new or old job prints Mechanical capacity to set up machinery (mill, lathe, surface grinder, etc.) to perform duties efficiently and accurately Mechanical capacity to machine or reconstruct existing tooling in the instance of a failure Proficient with Microsoft Office software: Excel, Word, Outlook Preferred Education and Experience The expectation is that the individual has achieved a minimum level of education and/or related expertise to qualify for this position. High school diploma or a passed General Education Development test required 2-Year Associate's Degree in Machine Tooling or Professional Certification preferred 1-2 Years Relevant Machining or Fabricating Work Experience required Experience with 2D and 3D Computer Aided Design or CAD Software preferred Competencies and Skills Initiative Problem Solving Mathematical Skills Time Management Team Based Mindset Thoroughness Communication Proficiency & Listening Safety Focused Position Type and Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. The employee must be able to: regularly lift, push, pull and/or carry objects weighing up to 75 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 75 pounds; regularly bend, climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl as necessary stand for prolonged periods frequently walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms work shifts of at least 8 hours, and occasionally longer, for 5 days each week; and It is an essential job function and safety rule, applicable to every employee working in a safety sensitive classified position, to be able to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner. Speech abilities required by this job include talking and hearing. Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to climactic variations, fumes or airborne particles, various levels of vibration, and moving mechanical parts. Various different types of Personal Protective Equipment might be required based on the employee's work location. The noise level in the work environment may require hearing protection.
